Every August the Hartford Wanderers RFC and New Haven Old Black RFC, in association with the Town of Berlin, hold an exhibition rugby match (dubbed “The Battle in Berlin”) as a fundraiser for the Connecticut Chapters of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially debilitating autoimmune disease affecting the central nervous system. The cause is unknown and there currently is no cure. Funds raised through chapter events, such as the Battle in Berlin, ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure and the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to more than 6,000 Connecticut residents diagnosed with MS. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the leading organization devoted to curing and controlling cystic fibrosis (CF). Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that can lead to life-threatening lung infections and digestive problems. Headquartered in Bethesda, MD., the Foundation funds CF research, has more than 80 chapter and branch offices throughout the country, and supports and accredits a nationwide network of CF care centers, which provide vital treatments and other CF resources to patients and families. The exhibition match is typically held in August at Scalise Field at Sage Park located in Berlin, Connecticut. Concessions are available through the Berlin Boosters Association. Tickets cost $5.00 with children under the age of 10 being free of charge. All proceeds are divided equally between the Connecticut Chapters of MS and CF. Once the day of the match is set, tickets will be available through members of the Hartford Wanderers RFC and New Haven Old Black RFC. Additionally, you will be able to purchase tickets through Tracy Wu at CF (www.cff.org/Chapters/connecticut/) and Nicole Marohn at MS of Connecticut (www.ctfightsms.org). The next battle in Berlin has been set for August 19, 2010. If you would like further information, please contact Christopher J. Picard at 860.670.0625. |
